After time and time again of silently cursing my cheap ironing board for leaving those nasty X's on my fabric from the frame below I finally decided enough was enough and I made my own. It's a super easy process and I can't tell you enough how happy I am with the results. It makes sewing so much more pleasurable!! If you've been kicking yourself to buy a new ironing board... just try making your own :DHere's how I did it:
1) Start out with a board in the size and shape you desire. I wanted a rectangle board and mine measures 16 by 24 inches which I find to work just perfect for me :D
2) Cut out a piece of Insul-Bright adding 8 inches to your measurements. So my measurements for the Insul-Bright was 24 by 32. You'll want to use two layers of Insul-Bright to help add some squish. Also I chose to use Insul-Bright because it is a great insulating batting that's easy to work with and reflects the heat back out making ironing easier. You should be able to get this at JoAnn's or check online.
3) Center your board on the two layers of Insul-Bright and beginning on one side staple it to the back side of your board trying to keep it even with staples about 2-3 inches apart (I suggest doing the long sides first). When you get to the corners just stop. Then do the opposite side being sure to pull the Insul-Bright tight.4) Do the same thing to the short sides working all the way to the corners, but leaving some fabric stick up.
5) When all sides are done you'll want to pull the corners down tight and staple them securely. Clip the extra.6) Now you'll want to cut out the piece of fabric your going to cover it with. I chose a red gingham cause it's so cute and will hide stains well. Cuts this piece with an extra 9 inches added to your measurements. So for example mine were 25 by 33.
7) Center your board on top of the fabric and staple the edges to the back side in the same way you did the Insul-Bright... but this time you can turn the fabric under first so it doesn't fray. This is optional... but looks really nice in the end.
8) Pull down the corners and turn under the extra fabric... staple securely and you're all done!!9) enjoy!!
